Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Republican candidate for governor of New York, has released a 100-day blueprint to overhaul state governance that leans heavily on reducing the tax burden, lowering utility rates, and ramping up investment in law enforcement. Blakeman has signaled that rolling back recent tax increases and capping utility rate hikes would be among his earliest executive priorities.

The second prong of the agenda—public safety—echoes a message that has animated Republican campaigns in New York since former Rep. Lee Zeldin came within roughly six percentage points of defeating Governor Hochul in 2022, the closest gubernatorial race in the state in a generation. Blakeman has been an outspoken critic of the state’s 2019 cashless bail reforms and has pledged to press the Legislature to restore greater judicial discretion over pretrial detention. His plan also contemplates additional funding streams for local police departments, expanded support for transit policing in New York City, and tougher penalties for repeat offenders. Critics of the approach argue that crime statistics in most major categories have declined from pandemic-era peaks, while supporters counter that public perception of disorder remains a decisive political issue.

Blakeman will first need to consolidate support within a Republican primary field that could include other prominent figures such as Rep. Elise Stefanik, who has publicly weighed a gubernatorial run, and Rep. Mike Lawler. The eventual nominee will face an incumbent governor who has leaned on record state budgets, housing initiatives, and a recently implemented Manhattan congestion pricing program to make her case for reelection.
