UK Chief Rabbi Warns of ‘Sustained Campaign of Violence’ Against Jewish Community Following Synagogue Arson Attempt

United Kingdom Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis has declared that British Jews are enduring a “sustained campaign of violence and intimidation” following an attempted arson attack on Kenton United Synagogue in north-west London. His stark warning comes amid a documented surge in antisemitic incidents across Britain since the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel.

The attempted arson at Kenton United Synagogue, a house of worship serving one of the larger Jewish populations in north-west London, has intensified longstanding concerns about the safety of British Jews. Chief Rabbi Mirvis, who has served as the spiritual leader of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth since 2013, characterized the attack not as an isolated event but as part of a pattern. His language—invoking a “sustained campaign”—marks one of the most forceful public statements he has issued during his tenure and reflects growing anxiety within a community that numbers roughly 290,000 people across the United Kingdom, according to the most recent census data.

Statistics compiled by the Community Security Trust, the charity responsible for monitoring antisemitism and providing security to Jewish institutions, paint a sobering picture. The CST documented 4,103 antisemitic incidents in 2023—more than double the previous annual record—with a sharp escalation following the Hamas attacks on southern Israel on October 7. Throughout 2024, incident levels remained historically elevated, with arson, vandalism, verbal abuse, and online threats reported across major urban centers including London, Manchester, Leeds, and Glasgow. Jewish schools have implemented reinforced security protocols, and many synagogues now operate with volunteer guards, CCTV systems, and police liaison arrangements.

The Kenton incident comes in the wake of a fatal attack at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation in Crumpsall, Manchester, earlier this year, in which two worshippers were killed on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. That attack prompted Prime Minister Keir Starmer to convene emergency security meetings and pledge additional funds for the Jewish Community Protective Security Grant, which underwrites guards and protective infrastructure at Jewish sites. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has repeatedly emphasized that antisemitic violence will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, while Metropolitan Police leadership has assigned additional patrols to neighborhoods with significant Jewish populations during religious holidays and Shabbat observances.
