The president’s absence from the April 16-19 gathering in Houston is prompting fresh scrutiny of the NRA’s diminished political standing after years of internal turmoil, legal battles, and financial decline.

Trump’s relationship with the NRA once stood as one of the most mutually beneficial alliances in modern Republican politics. The organization endorsed him earlier than it had any prior presidential candidate in 2016, spent an estimated $30 million to boost his first campaign, and watched as he appointed three Supreme Court justices who would ultimately expand Second Amendment protections through the landmark 2022 Bruen decision. Trump addressed every NRA annual convention from 2017 through 2023, using the forum to rally the gun rights base and lambast Democratic gun control proposals. His decision to skip the gathering for a second straight year represents a break from that well-established pattern, even as the NRA again backed him in the 2024 general election.

The snub arrives at a precarious moment for the organization. A years-long civil lawsuit brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James culminated in a February 2024 jury verdict finding longtime chief executive Wayne LaPierre liable for diverting millions in NRA funds for personal use, including luxury travel and clothing. LaPierre resigned days before the verdict. The NRA’s reported membership has fallen from a peak of roughly 5 million to an estimated 4 million or fewer, and its political spending in the 2024 cycle was a fraction of what it deployed in 2016 and 2020. Looking ahead, the NRA faces a court-ordered restructuring and continues to search for stable leadership under new CEO Doug Hamlin, who took the helm in May 2024. The absence of a sitting Republican president at its marquee annual event will fuel continued debate about whether the organization can reclaim its former clout or whether the gun rights movement is entering a new, more decentralized chapter.
