Don Schlitz, Grammy-Winning Songwriter Behind Kenny Rogers’ ‘The Gambler,’ Dies at 73

Don Schlitz, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee whose composition ‘The Gambler’ became one of the most iconic country songs of the 20th century, has died at the age of 73. His family confirmed the news, remembering a writer whose words shaped American popular music for nearly five decades.

Born August 29, 1952, in Durham, North Carolina, Schlitz moved to Nashville in 1973 with aspirations of becoming a professional songwriter. He famously worked overnight shifts as a computer operator at Vanderbilt University while pitching his songs by day, an apprenticeship that lasted roughly five years before his breakthrough. That breakthrough came in the form of ‘The Gambler,’ a song he reportedly wrote in about 20 minutes. Before Kenny Rogers turned it into a cultural landmark in 1978, the song had already been recorded by Bobby Bare, Johnny Cash and Schlitz himself. Rogers’ version won the Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance in 1980, reached No. 1 on the country charts, and inspired a series of television films that cemented the song’s place in American pop culture.

Beyond ‘The Gambler,’ Schlitz authored a remarkable string of country standards. He co-wrote ‘On the Other Hand’ and ‘Forever and Ever, Amen’ with Paul Overstreet, both career-defining hits for Randy Travis during the neotraditional country revival of the mid-1980s. ‘Forever and Ever, Amen’ earned Schlitz his second Grammy, for Best Country Song, in 1988. Other notable credits include ‘When You Say Nothing at All,’ a hit first for Keith Whitley in 1988 and later for Alison Krauss and Ronan Keating, as well as ‘I Feel Lucky’ for Mary Chapin Carpenter and ‘Don’t You Think This Outlaw Bit’s Done Got Out of Hand’ for Waylon Jennings. His writing helped define multiple eras of Nashville, bridging the outlaw movement of the 1970s, the traditionalist resurgence of the 1980s, and the mainstream country boom of the 1990s.

Schlitz’s death arrives at a moment when Nashville has lost several pillars of its golden era in recent years, including Kenny Rogers himself in 2020 and fellow songwriter Bobby Braddock in recent memory. Tributes from fellow artists and industry organizations are expected in the coming days, and the Country Music Hall of Fame is likely to incorporate remembrances into upcoming programming.
