Greek and American Envoys Declare Bilateral Ties at Historic High Point

Top diplomatic representatives from Greece and the United States have publicly affirmed that relations between the two NATO allies have reached what they describe as an all-time high, citing expanded defense cooperation, energy partnerships, and deepening economic ties. The mutual endorsement comes amid heightened geopolitical tension in the Eastern Mediterranean and a broader American strategic pivot toward Southeastern Europe.

The warming of the Athens–Washington relationship has been a multi-year diplomatic project, accelerated under consecutive U.S. administrations and sustained through changes in Greek government. Under Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Greece has positioned itself as what officials in both capitals describe as a “pillar of stability” in a volatile region that borders Turkey, the Western Balkans, and the Levant. The Mutual Defense Cooperation Agreement, originally signed in 1990 and substantially updated in October 2021, expanded American access to bases at Alexandroupoli, Larissa, Stefanovikio, and the longstanding hub at Souda Bay. Alexandroupoli in particular has emerged as a critical logistics node, enabling the U.S. and NATO to move forces northward into Bulgaria and Romania without relying on the Bosporus.

Energy has become another cornerstone of the partnership. Greece’s liquefied natural gas terminal at Revithoussa and the new floating LNG unit off Alexandroupoli have made the country a key entry point for American LNG destined for Central and Southeastern European markets. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, this infrastructure took on heightened importance as European Union member states scrambled to diversify away from Russian pipeline gas. On the military procurement side, Greece’s decision to acquire F-35 Lightning II aircraft from Lockheed Martin, approved by the U.S. State Department in 2024, represented one of the largest defense transactions in the country’s history and further aligned Athens with American defense-industrial priorities.

Looking ahead, analysts are watching several pressure points that could test the durability of the partnership. Chief among them is the long-running dispute between Greece and Turkey over maritime boundaries, airspace, and the status of islands in the Aegean — a conflict in which Washington has traditionally sought to maintain a careful balance, given that both Athens and Ankara are NATO allies. Additional items on the bilateral agenda include continued coordination on Cyprus reunification efforts, cybersecurity cooperation, and Greek participation in the 3+1 framework alongside Israel and Cyprus. Whether the current momentum can survive political transitions in either country remains an open question, but diplomats on both sides say the institutional architecture now in place is deeper than at any prior point in the relationship.
