Tennessee Governor Signs Resolution Declaring June ‘Nuclear Family Month’

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has signed a resolution officially designating June as “Nuclear Family Month” in the state, a symbolic move that overlaps with what many Americans recognize as Pride Month. The measure, passed by the Republican-controlled Tennessee General Assembly, celebrates the traditional family structure of a married mother and father raising children together.

The resolution, which cleared both chambers of the Tennessee General Assembly before being signed by Governor Lee, frames the nuclear family — typically defined as a married mother and father raising their biological or adopted children — as a cornerstone of American society. Supporters of the measure cite sociological research suggesting that children raised in two-parent households experience, on average, better educational and economic outcomes. The resolution’s timing in June is considered significant by observers, given that the month has been associated with LGBTQ Pride celebrations for more than five decades.

Tennessee has emerged as one of the most legislatively active states on social and cultural issues in recent years. The state passed one of the nation’s earliest bans on gender-affirming medical care for minors — a law that was ultimately upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in the 2025 case United States v. Skrmetti. Lawmakers have also passed measures restricting where certain adult-themed performances may occur, and the state’s education policies have drawn national attention for their approach to curriculum content involving sexuality and gender.
